10 Secrets To A Healthy and Happy Life

Being healthy doesn’t just mean being free from disease. According to the World Health Organization, health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being. Achieving health in mind, body, spirit, and finances can lead to a happy and fulfilled life.

In recent years, I’ve learned ten secrets to a happy and healthy life.

1. Master the fundamentals- exercise, diet, and sleep

Here is what has been working for me for some time now: walking or hiking, intermittent fasting, getting a solid 6-8 hours of sleep, and waking up early.
Intermittent fasting has kept me at a steady weight and managed my blood sugars without depriving myself of any food group. I have a family history of diabetes so this is important to me. There are many other benefits so I recommend you look into it. It did wonders for my mood and energy level.
Sleeping 6- 8 hours and waking up early increased my productivity and decreased my stress level.  I no longer feel like there are not enough hours in my day.
If you can get the fundamentals down, the rest will come easier.

2. Continuous growth

A mind that isn’t learning has stopped living. Depression is associated with a loss of interest in anything, and not having something to be passionate about. No matter how old you are, it is never too late to learn. Even if you know a subject very well, pretend you don’t and look at it with fresh eyes. You might just learn something new. Be fascinated! Every single day. Have a zest for learning!

3. Love more

You may know how you feel, but if the recipient of your love does not know how much you care, what’s the point? So this year resolve to be showier of your love. If showiness is not your thing, express it more. Put more love into everything you do, even in simple mundane tasks like washing dishes. You read that right. Give it a try. You will be a much happier person.

4. Be prepared

Prepare for the worst + hope for the best = peace of mind. Do you have your finances in order? Do you have an emergency plan in place in case of a disaster? Do you have your insurance information in case your house burns down?  Have you updated your beneficiaries on all your financial accounts? Do you have your will or trust ready in case something happens to you?

5. Get rid of clutter

And not just physical clutter which Marie Condo does a great job of, but also mind clutter that we pick up from the news and yes, social media. Things that we focus on that are not important and of no consequence to our bigger purpose and goals. Also, let go of mental and emotional baggage. Stop worrying about what others think. Forgive and be forgiven. Then move on.

6. Do it now

What have you been putting off? Do you want to write a book, start a blog, or sell online? Do you want to learn another language, or invest in real estate? How about meeting with a professional so you can see if you are saving enough for retirement?
What’s keeping you from doing it? Start from there and problem-solve. Clear the obstacles. One more thing: you will never be ready. So just do it! Now.

7. Stop should-ing yourself

I should do this, I should do that. Says who? You don’t have to do what others are doing or be like them. Create your own path. Define success for you, and set your goals to achieve that.

8. Reconnect with yourself and your higher being.

This is probably the most important of all, yet the most neglected because we let our minds and hearts get cluttered (see #5). How is your relationship with yourself? And with your higher being? Some of us call Him God, Lord, or Creator. Do you know your purpose? Why are you here? Make time to get in touch with your inner being and your creator.

9. Contribution

We are all part of a family, a community, a country, the human race. Define success for you. Define your legacy, and how you want to be remembered by the people around you. This takes years to accomplish so start today.

10. Play and explore

We all know ‘all work and no play’ is no fun. Use your creativity. Do something you love and create something great while you fully immerse in it. Have fun with it.

Living your BEST life, the Best Expression of your Spirit and Talents requires exploration, play, and creativity. You are never too old to play and explore. It is essential for the full enjoyment of life.
